In reflection of National Volunteer Week (April 10th – April 16th) we wanted to highlight a few volunteers who have helped us out at LIH over the past year! These volunteers have assisted us in working with out clients by holding instruments, making visuals, and cleaning instruments after sessions. Helping at LIH a music therapy volunteer allows individuals an opportunity to experience music therapy first hand and is a great way for students to determine if music therapy is a profession they would enjoy in the future. This week we would like to thank all of the volunteers who assisted with our most recent recital as well as the faces we’ve seen on a regular basis at LIH.
VOLUNTEER: Morgan Welch
“My name is is Morgan Welch. I am a junior at UW-LaCrosse double majoring in psychology and music. I teach piano lessons in the La Crosse area and have always loved music. When I leaned I could use music to benefit others I knew that was what I wanted to do. After I graduate from UW-L I plan on going to Grad school to become a music therapist. When the opportunity came up to volunteer at Life in Harmony I was excited because I would get to spend more time leaning about what it takes to be a music therapist, as well as meet some amazing kids. I’m so glad I have gotten to spend the semester here!”
VOLUNTEER: Hayli Mathe
We had the privilege of working with Hayli Mathe during the school year of 2014-2015 and summer of 2015 as Hayli was preparing to go to college to study coursework to set her up to become a music therapist. During this time, Hayli’s hard work paid off as she was awarded the Good Steward Scholarship for her volunteer work at The Parenting Place and LIH. This $500 award is given to two Luther High School Graduating Seniors who show dedication in volunteering in the community. “I have been volunteering at The Parenting Place for 6 years and Life In Harmony for a 1.5 years. At LIH, I help the team by completing projects that they use during sessions and help during some of the groups. This year have been attending Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN and majoring in music and psychology in hopes of attaining my master’s degree in music therapy!”
VOLUNTEER: Katie Stein
Katie Stein worked along side Sarah Kolander and Andrea Halvorson during her practicums as an Augsburg College Student. It has been so much fun seeing Katie’s confidence grow as well as her understanding of music therapy, from a clinical perspective. Katie is currently working on completing her master’s degree and will be out in the workforce very soon! We are excited to know what comes next for her!
